Reading has remained at the heart of school life throughout the summer term.

Children taking part in the Big Book Club completed a six-session programme designed to build confidence and develop a stronger love of reading. We are very proud of every child who took part and grateful to the parents and family members who supported the sessions. 

A special thank-you goes to Mrs Brady, our Reading Leader, who led the programme with her usual passion, knowledge and determination to help every child see themselves as a successful reader.

Our Year 6 and Year 1 Transition Reading Project has also brought children together. Year 6 pupils have shared books and encouraged some of our youngest readers, helping to create positive memories before they leave Bidston Avenue.

Families can continue this work during the holidays by joining the Summer Reading Challenge at any Wirral library. This year’s theme is based around music and making noise, and children are encouraged to borrow and read at least six books during the summer.

Celebrating cultures across our school

Culture Week brought colour, music, stories, art and dance into classrooms across Bidston Avenue.

Children explored traditions from many different parts of the world. Activities included Spanish dancing and flamenco, Indian stories, Rangoli patterns, African-inspired dot paintings and workshops delivered with support from the Minority Ethnic Achievement Service and our wonderful cook, Monica, and Edsential kitchen team.

Year 5 also explored British culture and the five British Values, considering how democracy, respect, tolerance, individual liberty and the rule of law shape our lives.  The week gave children the chance to celebrate differences, ask thoughtful questions and learn more about the many cultures represented within our school and wider community.

We are delighted that we have achieved Bronze Accreditation for both the Inclusive Attendance Award and the Attachment and Trauma Sensitive Schools Award.

These awards recognise the work taking place across school to make sure children feel welcomed, valued and supported. They also reflect our commitment to working closely with families, understanding the barriers that can affect attendance and learning, and creating a safe and nurturing environment where children are ready to succeed.

This has been a real team effort. Thank you to our staff for their care and commitment, to our parents and carers for their support and to our children for the resilience they show every day.

We are very proud of these achievements and will continue to build on the strong foundations already in place. 

At the end of this term, summer 2026, we will say a very fond goodbye to Mrs Donna Davies, who is retiring after serving the children and families of Bidston Avenue since 2014.  Mrs Davies has taught in Year 1 and has spent a number of years as part of our Foundation 2 team, helping many of our youngest children to settle into school, grow in confidence and build strong foundations for their future learning.

Across her time at Bidston Avenue, she has shown great care, patience and commitment to the children she has taught. Many families will remember the important part she played during their child’s first years in school.

We also say goodbye to Miss Done, who has worked with our Year 5 children this year. We thank her for her hard work and contribution to school life and wish her every success for the future.
