P.S.H.E. & C

Personal, Social, Health, Economic & Citizenship Education (PSHE & C)

This is a really important aspect of our curriculum and, if done correctly, has a massive impact on all our children.  There is no national curriculum for this area, but there is some guidance. from the Government.  PSHE & C can encompass many areas of study and it is left to our school to decide what to focus on.

We have a specific programme called Second Steps, which all children are taught.  The programme is an evidence-based social-emotional learning curriculum, which has helped to improve the lives of over 10 million U.S. students every year.  Mr Brady piloted the programme when it first came to the UK over 10 years ago and we have used it ever since he became headteacher.  It supports our children to be better equipped to manage their own emotions and build positive relationships... if we get that right then they’re better equipped to learn.

The programme is based on various themes:

  • Skills for learning
  • Empathy
  • Emotion management
  • Friendship skills and problem-solving

Please see the overview of our Second Step Scheme, which highlights the many areas and important themes the children learn about during their Bidston Avenue career.

We also teach about:

  • Bidston Avenue was the first school to work with Wirral Chamber of Commerce and are part of the Young Chamber, which provides opportunities to learn about the world of work by looking at their own skills (Me Inc.), creating their own products (Typhoo Tea Project) and enable are children to be preparing for the future world (application writing, interview technique and CV writing)
  • Drug and Alcohol Awareness using the Christopher Winter Project resources
  • 'Relationships & Growing Up' Education
  • Wirral Civic Award - children work on themes to help our communities and families
  • Eco-Schools
  • Save The Songbirds - Chester Zoo environmental project
