Eco-School and Climate Action Plan

Eco Team

Welcome to our Eco-Schools webpage.  The eco-team was awarded our fifth Green Flag award in 2024.

There are a number of eco-related projects going on at Bidston Avenue Primary school, including:

  • Planting our Hedgerow (1000 trees/plants growing around the school border to reduce vehicle emissions from Tollemache Road and Bidston Avenue) with the team from Mersey Forest and The Woodland Trust
  • Our solar panel installation scheme in association with Solar for Schools.

Our Solar Panel Scheme

We have 194 solar panels installed on the flat roof areas of our school.  This makes a total generating amount of 76KWh of power.

Between July 2020 and the end of August 2025, we have saved 50 tonnes of CO2 from being generated and added to our atmosphere.

On top of being eco-friendly, our current solar power scheme will help us to save money over the next 25 years.  This could amount to approximately £194,000+, which goes back into our school budget.

From July 2020 to August 2025, we have generated 221MW of solar electricity.  What we don't consume in school will be exported to the National Grid for someone else to use.

Check out this page to see how much electricity is being generated:

If you wish to add panels to your own school roof then contact Solar for Schools who can fund 100% of your panels or a percentage of your scheme. For more information go to: https://www.solarforschools.co.uk

Climate Action Plan

Summary for Our Families and Our Community
Published: For September 2025

Why this matters

At Bidston Avenue Primary School, we are committed to doing our bit to tackle climate change and protect the environment for future generations.  Our Climate Action Plan (CAP) sets out how we are reducing energy use, improving our buildings, and helping our pupils understand sustainability and the world around them.

What we’ve already done

✅ Replaced all our lighting with energy-efficient LED systems
✅ Fitted motion sensors to reduce energy waste
✅ Installed 194 solar panels, generating renewable energy and reducing our carbon footprint
✅ Fully replaced our old 1914 slate roof with a new, eco-friendly insulated roof
✅ Planted over 1,000 daffodils and perimeter hedgerows to improve air quality and biodiversity
✅ Gained Bronze and Silver Modeshift STARS awards for active travel
✅ Improved our energy rating from DEC C (63) in 2017 to DEC B (36) in 2024

What we’re planning next

  • Add shaded areas to our playgrounds to protect children during hot weather
  • Install bike and scooter racks (funded by Liverpool City Region)
  • Explore eco-friendly air conditioning for classrooms that overheat
  • Continue working towards low-carbon heating for the future
  • Install EV charging points for school use

What children are learning

Our pupils are learning about climate change and sustainability through:

  • Geography, science and PSHE lessons
  • Solar panel workshops with external experts
  • Walk to School initiatives and pupil-led eco projects
  • Our Eco Council and School Council.

Our Building's Current Performance - Display Energy Certification (2025)

We are proud that our 111 year old building has an energy rating of 'B'.  This shows the impact of our work, so far.  It does not take into account that we generate our own electricity.
