RSHE
(**Edited 3rd July 2026 after statutory guidance update)
At Bidston Avenue Primary School, we want all of our children to grow up healthy, happy, safe and confident, with the knowledge and skills they need to build positive relationships and make informed choices throughout their lives.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is a statutory part of the primary curriculum and plays an important role in supporting children's personal development, wellbeing and safeguarding. Our curriculum helps pupils develop healthy, respectful relationships, understand personal boundaries, recognise trusted adults, stay safe both online and offline, and prepare for the physical and emotional changes of growing up.
We deliver our RSHE curriculum using the 1decision programme, alongside the National Curriculum for Science. The programme has been quality assured by the PSHE Association and provides engaging, age-appropriate learning through interactive activities, discussion and real-life scenarios. Lessons are carefully planned to meet the needs of our pupils and reflect current statutory guidance.
As part of our commitment to working in partnership with parents and carers, we always inform families before our Year 5 Puberty unit and Year 6 Conception unit are taught. Parents and carers are invited to view the teaching materials, ask questions and discuss the content with school staff. The Year 6 Conception unit includes non-statutory sex education, and parents have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from this specific unit. There is no right to withdraw from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or the National Curriculum for Science, including learning about puberty.
Our RSHE policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects current statutory guidance, safeguarding expectations and the needs of our pupils. We value the views of parents and carers and welcome feedback as part of our ongoing review process.
Below you will find our current RSHE Policy, Knowledge and Skills Progression and additional information about the programme we deliver. If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of our RSHE curriculum, please contact the school—we are always happy to help.
We value the views of our parents and carers and are committed to working in partnership when reviewing our RSHE policy and curriculum. The Department for Education requires schools to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their Relationships Education policy, providing opportunities to ask questions, share feedback and understand how RSHE is taught at our school.
Our consultation survey remains open throughout the year so that parents and carers can provide feedback at any time. We review responses periodically to help inform future policy reviews and curriculum development. While we carefully consider all feedback received, decisions about the content and delivery of the RSHE curriculum remain the responsibility of the school and must reflect statutory guidance and the needs of our pupils.
