Phonics Guidance for Parents

Hello Everyone!

We hope you are all well.  We are missing you all and we hope that you are enjoying learning at home with your families.

We have put some phonic activities on our Year 1 Home Learning Workspace for you to enjoy.  Most of our Y1 children are working at Phase 4 or Phase 5 (they will be able to tell you), but it might be useful for some of you to revisit Phase 3 to give your children confidence at home. If you’re in doubt, start at Phase 3 and work your way up.

Phonics is a tricky business, so we’ve added some guidance for you to help you along the way. There are some good videos on YouTube (UK versions) with teachers explaining various concepts, so it’s worth having a search if you’re unsure. Please email the school office if you have any specific concerns and we’ll do our best to get back to you.

We’ve included a ‘Sound Families’ word mat which helps to explain that the same sound can be spelt a number of different ways. Some of the children have already started learning some of the families.

We’ve included a table showing the ‘tricky words’ from Phases 2 to 3. It’s important that the children can read and spell as many of these words as possible.  Please use the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK system to help your children learn to spell each word.

We’ll be adding more phonics activities over the weeks ahead.

Stay safe and well.
